Today there was short coverage of the corporate music competition, in the Hindu newspaper. Rajesh was mentioned special for his nice drumming. Anyway the wound of having missed the 1st place still there unhealed.

Corporate Music Competition :- Oct 2005
Thanks to BigDeal, for their good intention & effort to conduct the Corp Music. There were 3 category of competitions.
1. Female solo singing 2. Male solo singing 3. Group music / light music. We participated in Group music. We prepared 4 songs (Kannan Vandhu Paadukindran from Irattai Vaal Kuruvi, Megam Kotattum from Enakul Oruvan, Vaan Megam from Mouna Raagam & Suttrum Bhoomi Suttrum from Dum Dum Dum), out of which 3 can be performed on stage.
I play lead guitar. But we had no Bass Guitarist. So I played the Bass. Because no song will become complete without Bass. I practiced the Bass for the first 3 songs and for the last song Sripathy practiced the Bass. I practiced the lead for the 4th song. That lead I love much. The day before the competition we (Rajesh, Sripathy, Sriram, Srinivasan & me) decided to play the first 3 songs only. So for me, no need to worry about carrying two guitars. Bass Guitar is enough.
I dreamt that the Bass we play should make a big difference. But what happened on stage? Once the previous team finished, we got into the stage immediately. Everybody in our team, focused on their instrument to get it tuned and ready for the start. I checked the volume of my Bass guitar. It was less than I needed. Asked Rajavel (our sound engineer/ SE) for more volume for me. Rajavel, needs to work with the BigDeal's SE and sort out the issue. Rajavel requested the BigDeal's SE for more volume for the Bass. But the volume did not turn out as I expected. Bass I played was hardly audible to me. So I requested for more volume. Then shouted for more volume. Rajavel did the same to the BigDeal's SE. No volume. Not only to me, Srinivasan's keyboard piece was cut inbetween. That should have been a punchy piece. But it was cut inbetween. I realized, Sripathy was shouting for more volume when he was playing his part in the Megam Kotattum song. Rajesh was tensed when he realized the Mick of his Drums was not set proper. Oh God. It was totally a mess, as far as we heard from the stage.
But as usual there were good number of claps at the end of our performance. And none of us ever had a chance to look at the judges during our performance. When BigDeal conducted the show for the first time, I looked at one of the judges (Karthick, a well known singer here) and observed a wow effect in his face when our music started in the first song. We got the first place in that competition. But this time, none of us did observe anything from the judges during our performance. No idea, on what the judges would have measured about our performance. Judges were Gangai Amaran, Radio Mirchi Suchithra, Mathangi, Sabesh Murali. Gangai Amaran, is a good musician. He has been in the Music industry for quite a big time (around 30 yrs). But did not have any idea on the other judges. They should be good musicians. That was the only factor that gave us some hope. Because if you are a good musician, you will acknowledge the effort that we have put in the songs that we performed. Anyway, nothing is guaranteed, if the sound system was not good.
We did not know how was our output for the audience. I personally thought we will not get any prize at all. 'cause I was not satisfied with the Bass part of our performance. Atlast, judges came on the stage to announce the winners. Infosys team was called to the stage to get their 3rd prize. Following that Gangai Amaran announced the 2nd place and called that team to the stage. The 2nd team is none other than ours (AdventNet). Oh. I couldn't believe. Anyway, deep inside, I was actually disappointed for not winning the competition. We were there at the stage with the judges. Took snaps, took our prizes & returned. 1st place went to HCL.
We our group went to "Murugan Idly Kadai" and had our dinner and returned home.
Though, getting the 2nd place lightened the situation to some extend, I personally thought there is much contribution for the winning from my side. Probably if the BASS was in the proper level, we could have done magics at our performance. Since the Bass did not find its balance in the audio, I literellay felt my self a waste on the stage. Oh God, need to avoid such performances.
Apart form this, after the competition, I could feel the areas that I need to improve in my playing. I recalled my recent reading, which goes as below.
